Course Description

The Medical Assisting program (MA)  provides entry-level theory and limited “hands-on” training in basic and routine clinical and office tasks. This program equip the MA with the competencies required to perform clinical or office duties. MA student will be trained to perform at a minimum entry level in positions normally available in a medical facility such as physicians’, chiropractors’, or podiatrists’ offices and clinics.   This program provides learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Additionally, the program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills or to retrain in the area of medical assisting. 

 

The student is trained to perform clinical procedures, prepare patients for physical exams, and assist the physician with other exams.  The graduate is trained to assist in EKG, X -ray procedures, first aid, and phlebotomy. The MA can assist  physicians with minor surgical procedures and trained to sterilize and care for instruments and learn health-related ethics and other business principles to assist practitioner’s  with patients.

Pre-Requisites

  • Access to a desktop  or laptop computer and Internet as well as a working knowledge of computers and are required.

  • Completing Medical Terminology before starting this course is strongly recommended. 

Learning Outcomes

Medical Assistants are  trained to work in ambulatory care (outpatient) settings and are multi-skilled healthcare professionals trained in both  clinical and administrative duties.

Administrative duties:

  • Perform coaching within scope of practice and patient education.

  • Utilize computer applications, billing, bookkeeping and handling correspondence,

  • HIPPA and facility safety compliance training

  • Answering telephones, welcoming patients and scheduling appointments

  • Communicate with patients, family members and practitioners

  • Update and file patient medical health records and complete insurance forms

  • Arrange and schedule patient hospital admissions and laboratory services

 

Clinical duties:

  • Explain treatment procedures, medication instructions and special diets to patients

  • Perform basic laboratory tests

  • Transmit prescription refills as directed by provider

  • Record medical histories, vital signs and prepare patients for examinations

  • Perform electrocardiograms

  • Follow OSHA/CDC guidelines for infection control

  • Assist physician during patient examinations and minor surgical procedures

  • Perform wound care and changing dressings and First Aid procedures

  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens

  • Prepare and administer medications  directed by a physician or any other licensed provider (i.e. a nurse practitioner or physician assistant)
